Our Foreign Language Programme is seeking applications for the position of

Anglo-American Law Lecturer (m/w/d) *

Applications are invited for a full-time position with an initial contract of two years, with renewal possible, starting no later than 1 September 2024. The successful candidate will work in our Foreign Language Communication Programme and report directly to the Director. Our Foreign Language Communication Programme offers Legal English courses with a focus on the fundamental principles of the common law system as practised in Anglo-American legal traditions. All our students speak fluent English and are highly motivated to improve their legal English skills. The English training is interactive, and topic based, covering the areas of Introduction to Anglo-American Law, Contract Law, Legal Negotiation, Law and Society (Mooting) and Legal Writing and Research. This is an extremely attractive post for a native English speaker with a sound legal qualification from a common law or mixed civil/common-law jurisdiction.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • teach up to 15 hours per week. This amounts to six, 90-minute classes per week during the trimester.
  • grade written assignments and oral exams.
  • support the Director with planning and developing the curriculum, related research tasks, and administrative duties.
  • assist with developing e-learning content such as scripts for educational video segments, podcasts and digital scripts.
  • conduct research in the field of Anglo-American law and contribute to scholarly publications.
  • participate in academic conferences, workshops, and seminars related to Legal Skills and Anglo-American law.
  • organise an internal mooting competition and assist with coaching students for international English language mooting competitions.
  • support with proofreading and editing of English texts.
  • organise and participate in the department, “Legal London Trip”, which takes place annually in April.

Applicants are expected to fulfil the following criteria:

  • be a native or near-native English speaker.
  • hold a university degree in law (LL. B or JD) from a common law or mixed civil/common-law jurisdiction.
  • a Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert.TESol qualification and/or experience working in a law firm environment are desired qualifications.
  • experience in teaching legal skills, legal English or law in a university, or other comparable institution is a plus.
